When we hear the word “roof”, we think of shingles that go on top of our house. But, there is much more to installing a shingle roof than that! MI Construction & Roofing is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, meaning we have to meet strict professional standards and keep our clients informed on the newest products and information. Here are several components of roofing, and their definitions, to help you get a better understanding of what makes up the barrier between our homes and the elements.

.
“Seal” – Sealing creates a water-proof barrier. This includes an ice and water shield, as well as underlayment.
  • What is underlayment?: “Roofing underlayment is what lies between the shingles and the roof sheathing, or roof deck, which is typically either plywood or OSB. It’s installed directly on the roof deck and provides a secondary layer of protection from the elements, including rain, snow, and wind”- owenscorning.com
“Defend” – Defense against the elements with starter shingles, shingles, and hip & ridge shingles.
“Breathe” – Air flow is critical to a healthy roof and home! Ventilation includes intake vents and exhaust vents.
*The light entering your attic from these areas can be attributed to the vents that are installed under the eaves of your home.*
